Everywhere around them, shells were dropping, and so were men. The ground was constantly shaking and the noise from the explosions was deafening. Every so often, Billy would lean out over the ledge and take pot-shots at the advancing Germans. Bodies were piling up on top of each other as wave after wave of enemy troops were mown down by machine gun fire. His commanding officers stood back barking orders and shouting at the men to cover, or when to make the next run towards the adjacent trench. They were completely surrounded.
